Transgenic Sheep

Transgenic Sheep Born in Beijing

December 24th, 2000

BEIJING, December 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough in transgene fields by creating sheep with human genes, according to a press conference held in Beijing Sunday.  The three sheep, two male and one female, are now living in the Shunyi county in Beijing, said scientists from the China Agricultural University.  The transgenic sheep were created through the "sheep mammary bio-reactor" project, which integrated some human genes with the embryo of a sheep.  The project started in 1998. Four transgenic sheep were born this June, but one female died three days later.
Through the use of transgenosis technology, scientists said, people are able to obtain valuable protein and medicine from the milk of the transgenic sheep.

Scottish Transgenic Sheep Flock Seen Safe...

. . .for Now

Reuters, March 16th, 2001

LONDON - A flock of precious transgenic sheep, bred to produce medicines in their milk, is safe from Britain's foot-and-mouth disease for now, the biotechnology company that owns them said on Friday. PPL Therapeutics, which helped produce Dolly the cloned sheep, said on Friday that its transgenic sheep flocks in Scotland were effectively isolated in the middle of an arable farming area.

``This should not affect PPL,'' Managing Director Ron James told Reuters. ``We have run a quarantine farm in Scotland for 9 years, and no animals have been brought in since then. All our staff shower as they come into work and as they go out, and we have brought in no feed that contains any animal protein.''

PPL has nearly 700 transgenic sheep on its farm, which is across the country from the area where foot-and-mouth has so far been found in the south west of Scotland.

The animals have been genetically engineered--but not cloned--to produce human proteins in their milk. PPL hopes to launch its first sheep's milk-derived drug, to treat the lung condition emphysema, in late 2004.

Its main production flocks are located in New Zealand, where some 4,000 sheep will produce the emphysema medicine, once it wins regulatory approval.

James said that while the risk of foot-and-mouth at present was remote, PPL had contingency plans should infection reach the site and animals have to be slaughtered. It has stores of frozen transgenic semen held at two sites from which new gene-spliced animals could be produced if necessary.

Dolly herself, the world's first cloned mammal, is being held in quarantine at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh. PPL collaborated with Roslin in cloning her in 1996.

Sheep that are 15% Human!

Many reports on-line are coming out about chimeric man-sheep creatures developed.

Scientists have created the world’s first human-sheep chimera, which has the body of a sheep and half-human organs.  The sheep have 15 per cent human cells and 85 per cent animal cells, and their evolution brings the prospect of animal organs being transplanted into humans one step closer.  Professor Esmail Zanjani, of the University of Nevada, has spent seven years and £5million perfecting the technique, which involves injecting adult human cells into a sheep’s fetus.

What is the promise:

He has already created a sheep liver which has a large proportion of human cells and eventually hopes to precisely match a sheep to a transplant patient, using their own stem cells to create their own flock of sheep.

The process would involve extracting stem cells from the donor’s bone marrow and injecting them into the peritoneum of a sheep’s foetus. When the lamb is born, two months later, it would have a liver, heart, lungs and brain that are partly human and available for transplant. -READ MORE

Transgenic Cats
Every single transgenic animal of any species born so far has had genetic defects that scientists admit they cannot predict and that seem to adhere to no pattern. Transgenic animals are being born with lungs that don't inflate, for example. Others can't stand up. Most—98 percent—abort their fetuses. Researchers are driven by money, not ethics. They have no idea what will happen to cats if they remove the genes that cause sneezing in people. Those genes are there for a reason, and tinkering causes physiological and immune system problems that researchers admit they can neither anticipate nor control.
