Are You Real?

“The Bible is a Fairy Tale”
Bill Maher, host of Politically Incorrect on ABC; August 22, 2001

Bill Maher, host of HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher , says that all Christians are crazy and are unenlightened because of their faith. Maher made the comments on MSNBC's Scarborough Country. Maher says Christians have a “Neurological Disorder” and are “Crazy.”

Bill Maher said:

“We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion… I think that religion stops people from thinking. I think it justifies crazies. I think that flying planes in a building was a faith-based initiative. I think religion is a neurological disorder. If you look at it logically, it's something that was drilled into your head when you were a small child."

"When you look at belief in such things—as do you go to heaven, is there a devil—we have more in common with (Muslin countries) Turkey and Iran and Syria than we do with European nations and Canada and nations that, yes, I would consider more enlightened that us.”

Are Christians insane? Do we flock to religion as a way of cowering in numbers to give us strength? This is how skeptics and professed atheists view Christians.

I once worked with a man who was a professed atheists nd evolutionist. His god was Marilyn More (sex), as evidenced by the poster of her on the side of his tool box and the stash of dirty Penthouse and Playboy magazines that he kept inside his tool box. He used to be abusive and unkind, insulting and challenging my beliefs and sincerity continually. One day I overhead him explaining to a group of men his philosophy on religion and how it all began. His name was Mike. Mike claimed that prehistoric cavemen fought amongst each other just as men do today.

Mike believed that some of the apes advanced in intelligence over the other apes, giving them the privilege of a better life—more females, more money, better homes and a better life overall. So Mike said the weaker, less fortunate apes, decided to create a religion that would elevate them to a superior status, having something that the other apes didn't. And so religion was born out of a competitive spirit amongst prehistoric men, as a means of having something better and more noble than what other men possessed. This enabled groups of men to become self-proclaimed spiritual princes and “the chosen” in contrast to their fellow mankind. This is what Mike believes.

That was decades ago when I knew Mike. I don't know if he's still alive today. He was in his 60's then, so he's probably in Hell now. I hope by some chance he repented of his unbelief and believed the Gospel, but I doubt that very much. Mike, like Bill Maher and Jesse Ventura, hated God. Also, comedian George Carlin, who continually blasphemed and challenged God's omnipotence and existence.

May God make the Christian life real to us. Help us to realize that David Letterman, Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno just aren’t that funny. Hell is forever! Conan jokes about Hell. The sitcoms and the TV shows and the movies just aren’t that cool. The rock music just isn’t that great anymore when we realize that there is a far greater purpose for our lives; to win souls to Jesus Christ. Amen and amen!

Maher said he wasn't speaking only of evangelicals, but included all religious people. He said he agreed with Jesse Ventura "who had that quote about religion is a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers."
