Should the Word Satanic Be Capitalized?

By David J. Stewart | May 2018

Revelation 20:2, “And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years.”

Here is my Christian opinion. Satan is a proper noun, a name, and should always be capitalized; therefore, so also should the adjective “Satanic” be capitalized. The name “David” is capitalized, and so also is the adjective “Davidic.”

When refer to a demon, “devil” is used; but when referring to Satan, the “Devil” is used.

The word “Biblical” should also be capitalized, out of respect for the Holy Bible! I know English grammarians will argue the point, knock your socks off! I feel strange when using “biblical” instead of “Biblical,” because of my respect for God's inspired Word. I have used both spellings in the past, but am starting to just use capitalizations anytime I make reference to Biblical things; such as, Satan, Devil, Epistle, The Book, the heavenly Mercy Seat, Heaven, Hell, et cetera.

I could be wrong on some of these things, but this is how I feel as a Christian believer. From reading what is officially “proper” according to English rules of grammar, there seems to be a difference of opinion, depending on whether you ask a Christian or a secular person.

I know one thing is certain, our American society has lost respect for the holy things of God, especially in these modern perilous times. Oh, that our generation would seek the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the incarnate Word of God (John 1:1-3, 14). ...

“The existence of the Bible, as a book for the people, is the greatest benefit which the human race has ever experienced. Every attempt to belittle it is a crime against humanity.” —Immanuel Kant (1724-1804)

“The Bible has been the Magna Carta of the poor and oppressed. The human race is not in a position to dispense with it.” —Thomas Huxley (1825-1895)

“So great is my veneration for the Bible that the earlier my children begin to read it the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of
society. I have for many years made it a practice to read through the Bible every year.” —U.S. President John Quincy Adams (1767-1848)

“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible. ” —U.S. President George Washington (1732-1799)
