Can a Christian Be a Catholic?

I recently received an e-mail from a gentleman who said he had friends who attended the Catholic church.  He believes that they are saved.  He asked me if I thought it was possible for a Catholic to also be a Christian.  Here is my reply...

Hello Ryan,

Thank you for your e-mail and for visiting my website.

Going to a Catholic church won't send a person to hell, just so long as they don't adhere to the damnable teachings of Catholicism.   The false teachings of the Catholic church will definitely send a person to hell if they follow them.  I'm certain that there are true believers who foolishly go to the Catholic church.  It is possible for an immature believer to attend Catholic services, but it is wrong.  Salvation is not dependent upon any works, only simple faith in Christ.

Let me be clear...anyone who trusts in the seven sacraments, baptism, holy Eucharist, the pope, the priest, the church, good works, confession, the Rosary, Mother Mary, or self righteousness is NOT a Christian. ONLY through exclusive 100% faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can any person be saved.  No true Catholic will go to heaven because Roman Catholicism is a lie of the devil.  Catholicism is of the devil.

A true Christian who attends a Catholic church is carnal, not in good fellowship with God.  No true Christian can attend a Catholic church service with God's blessing.  We should not feed at the devil's table.  Your friends need to come out from among the wicked and be separate.  If they are not spiritual enough to do so, then kindly show them 2nd Corinthians 6:17...

"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you" -2nd Corinthians 6:17

Do not attend Catholic services with them...

"For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds." 2nd John 1:11

I would SERIOUSLY question the salvation of someone who claims to be a born again believer and yet attends a cult.  The Holy Spirit should be doing some serious convicting according to Hebrews 12:8.  Catholicism is a lie.

Yes, your friends can be saved and still attend a Catholic church, but it is a sure sign of their carnality.  Like I said, I would seriously question the salvation of someone who goes to a church that prays to statues.  You'd be surprised how many people "think" they are saved, but truly are not.  NOTHING can save a man accept faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are all hell-deserving sinners.  Only Jesus can save us because only Jesus died upon the cross.  I would try to explain to your friends that the Catholic church blasphemes against God and His Word by elevating Mary to the status of a Saviour (co redeemer).  It is wicked.  No Christian should be supportive of such wickedness.  Don't condemn your friends, but let them know where you stand on the matter.  If your friends don't separate from Roman Catholicism, then you are Biblically commanded to separate from them.

kindest regards,

David J. Stewart
