Alcohol is a Baited Trap!
By David J. Stewart
"Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel." -Proverb 20:17

Alcohol isn't just a trap; it's a baited trap. Proverb 20:17 tells us that "bread of deceit" is at first SWEET to a man. This is true of all sins, scams and evils. Satan always shows us the front yard; but never the back. Satan shows us the neon lights of Broadway and Las Vegas; but he doesn't show us the hospitals, prisons and morgues. Satan is a big liar (John 8:44), and there's no bigger lie today than the phrase DRINK RESPONSIBLY. What a misnomer! Having even one drink of alcohol begins to degrade one's better sense of judgment. There is no way possible to drink alcohol responsibly! Alcohol is a woeful evil in America which we have brought upon ourselves. Unfairly, it's rarely the drunk driver who dies.
The Bible says in John 10:10 that Satan comes to us with only one purpose: to kill, steal and destroy. When you drink alcohol, you are playing Russian Roulette my friend. Guam Police officer, Frank Smith, was killed in the line of duty on December 30, 2007 when a 26-year old drunken female, Charmi Aizawa Retuyan, plowed into him with her SUV. Officer J.E.D Santo Tomas provided watch over Retuyan while she was treated at Guam Memorial Hospital for several small lacerations and abrasions. He said he heard Retuyan state, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to kill him. I was just drunk."

A Few Words of Wisdom
Alcohol by nature has an element of deceit inherent to it. The Bible teaches this. Proverb 20:1 warns us that "strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." The term "strong drink" is used in the Bible to refer to intoxicating liquor. When the New Testament speaks of wine, such as the wine that Jesus made from water, it was NOT strong drink. Even children drank the wine because it was not intoxicating. This would be comparable today to the non-alcoholic sparkling champagnes that are sold at local grocery stores. Jesus certainly wouldn't have provided booze at a wedding where little children were present. Jesus never made strong drink.
Do you think anyone decides to kill someone with their car while drunk? No, of course not; but it happens every day all across America. People are deceived by strong drink, just as God said they would be. They think they can "drink responsibly"; but they can't. Actor Tim Allen was arrested for a DUI. George Jones, Glen Campbell and Mel Gibson are famous celebrities who've all been arrested for DUIs. Even U.S. President George W. Bush has a previous DUI arrest on his record. U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has not one; but two DUI arrests (back-to-back). Do you think any of these famous people would want such a horrible charge of irresponsibility on their permanent record? No, but they all do. You see friend, you are playing with fire when you drink beer, and it's just a matter of time until YOU GET BURNED. It only takes once (PDF). Driving Under The Influence often becomes Dying Under The Influence.
As my pastor used to wisely say, "You can't take two drinks of beer if you don't take the first."
