Reality TV Exploits People

by David J. Stewart

“Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places.” —Numbers 33:52

Reality TV has become extremely popular these days with the public, raking in billions of dollars in profits for the television networks. Reality TV features real people's problems, turning those problems into a game show, exploiting participants and viewers as a malicious way to boost network ratings. It is evil.

Does Reality TV exploit both the participants and the viewers?

The Parents Television Council (PTC) did an analysis of these reality shows from January 2001 to May 2002. They found that "Survivor 2` was one of the most viewed shows by 2-11 year olds during May 2001, pulling in 3.5million for the last episode. The PTC reviewed 38 series, their main concerns being sexual content, foul language and violence. In all, they found 1907 instances of all these obscenities. The PTC analysed these instances in great detail, even giving the rate per hour for obscenities. The PTC concluded their analysis with: The statistics compiled in this study, suggest that reality programming contributes significantly to the already high level of sex and foul language on television. Reality based entertainment programmes aren't going away any time soon. We can expect them only to become more common, and sadly, increasingly outrageous. " (PTC website, 2004)

This is unfortunately proven by Fox's reality TV show "Who's Your Daddy?` where the adoption process is made a mockery of. Following a woman on the trail to find her birth father, they throw in 7 men who will also claim to be her father and she has to pick the real one. If she believes one of these men is her real father that man walks away with $100,000. If that isn't exploitation towards the woman and her father, then what is? The decision of adoption and the journey of finding ones birth parents is a complex and emotional one, which Fox has turned into entertainment. This created worry, in that this builds distrust in these situations and gives people a chance to make easy money, by exploiting what could be their real child.

It appears that television networks will stoop lower than low in an attempt to make money. Truly the love of money is the root of all evil as the Bible proclaims in 1st Timothy 6:10. The Parents Television Council (PTC) did other recent studies, revealing that TV executives are exploiting underaged teen girls for profits. Montel Williams, Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Springer... they all take advantage of shattered lives and broken families to make a buck. They may claim to have sincere intentions, but they also have gigantic bank accounts from doing what they do, i.e., exploiting people. I can't stand talk shows like that. It is a sad commentary concerning the human race that people love bad news, crime and gore. Advertisers intentionally warn people of graphic contents, knowing that it's a sure way to lure people into watching a video selling something. People have stopped lower than low to make money.

Years ago someone contacted me and offered to promote my website. At that time my website was very small in comparison to what it is today. The man didn't go into any details, he just said that in exchange for promoting my website on their large network, that they only wanted to promote their stuff. I am so glad that God put it in my heart to ask exactly what they planned to promote. The man was hesitant and beat around the bush, so I adamantly said that it would be a cold day in Hell before I ever promoted anything with lewd images. Since he wasn't speaking up, I knew it must be something that would likely offend me (and I was right).

It turned out that the jerk wanted to put Girls Gone Wild on my web. They should be called, Girls Gone to Hell. I told him it would NEVER happen, and that was the end of that. From that day until now I won't even consider any offers by anyone, because many people have become the scum of the earth and will sell their own mother to make a buck. I have worked very hard, article by article for these many years, without taking any shortcuts. I've never made a penny and never will. I hate money and everything about it. I hate greed. I won't even associate with someone who has making money on their mind all the time. Stay away from me. Psalm 15:5 teaches that money-hungry people are unstable and given to change. God says that a man who doesn't want to be moved (compromised) must forsake any desire to make money, nor become more wealthy. We are living in greedy times of fraud, dishonesty, liars, thieves and manipulators.

Reality TV is just another scheme by which greedy people are exploiting the hurting to make money. Anything for a buck these days. There's not a woman alive who would pose naked for free in a pornographic magazine. No wonder the Bible says that the LOVE OF MONEY is the root of all evil (1st Timothy 6:10). People love money, causing brother to sue brother in court, and son to sue father, and sister against sister, and wife against husband, and neighbor against neighbor. It is heathendom. Money is nothing more than a piece of paper, just as Jesus said. Give Caesar what is Caesars.

If people want the money, take it you greedy fools, my treasures are laid up in Heaven where neither thieves, nor rust and moth can corrupt them (Matthew 6:20). Greedy people here on earth will wish they could eat out of garbage pails in eternity. Don't expect any rewards from the Lord. If Heaven were going to be equally great for everyone, then there would have been no need for Jesus to tell believers to lay up treasures in Heaven, and Daniel 12:3 wouldn't be in the Bible. But they are in the Bible because God meant what He said. If you die in your sins, you will go to Hell for ever (2nd Thessalonians 1:8-9). And if you're saved, but never do anything for Jesus' sakes or the gospel's, then you'll receive NOTHING from God on Judgment Day (1st Corinthians 3:11). You won't enjoy Heaven anywhere near as much as a believer who sacrifices for God, winning many souls to Christ, helping the poor and needy, contending for the faith, and redeeming the time. The Bible has much to say about rewards, and crowns, and sharing in the Lord's riches. But don't expect the stick from the corndog if you live selfishly and let the world go to Hell.

America has forsaken the God of the holy Bible. We deserve judgment, not God's blessings. We may trust in greed or goods; but certainly not in the holy God of the Bible. America has sinned greatly in the sight of God Almighty (abortion, legalized prostitution, gambling, alcohol, government crimes, Hollywood, Las Vegas, Rock music, pornography, et cetera... America is Immoral). Is it nothing to you? Will you simply walk away like the rest with your pompous attitude and stiffnecked pride? Television is truly the AMERICAN IDOL. We are a nation of celebrity worshippers! Selena Gomez and Katy Perry sing the pathetic song, ROCK GOD, which mocks preaching preachers and blasphemes God. The U.S. today has become a Sex-Sicko Society, patterned after San FranSICKO!

Isaiah 2:11, “The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.”
